Spartanburg is the largest city in Spartanburg Co., SC.
You may hear Spartanburg, SC called by a couple of nicknames like Hub City and Sparkle City.
It got the nickname Hub City because it used to be a large railroad hub.
It got the name Sparkle City after a popular rock band from the area called the The Sparkletones.
They appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and American Bandstand. They had a popular song that hit #17 in the Billboard Top 100 in 1957 called “Black Slacks.”
