Spartanburg is best place to live in South Carolina, says U.S. News

In the Upstate, we love a good list with many of our cities and towns gaining regional and national attention as best places to live, retire, eat and stay overnight.
The Upstate – namely Spartanburg – has done it again with Hub City ranking No. 1 on U.S. News’ Best Places to Live in South Carolina in 2021-22. Rounding out the Top 5 are: 2. Myrtle Beach; 3. Greenville; 4. Charleston; and 5. Columbia.
U.S. News analyzed 150 metro areas in the United States to find the best places to live based on quality of life and the job market in each metro area. Other considerations were the value of living there and people’s desire to live there.
Here’s some of what U.S News said about Spartanburg:
“With multiple institutions of higher learning and a burgeoning food scene, Spartanburg always offers things to do on the weekends. Locals can ride their bicycles around town, shop at farmers markets, check out festivals, or enjoy local restaurants and breweries. Spartanburg is a pet-friendly city, where it’s common to see locals walking their dogs downtown or sharing a meal on a restaurant patio with pets in tow.”
Not only did Spartanburg top the list in South Carolina, it also scored the following national rankings from U.S. News:
- No. 24 Best Places to Live
- No. 37 Best Places to Retire
- No. 12 Fastest-Growing Places
- No. 18 Cheapest Places to Live
Coming in at No. 3 on the list of Best Places to Live in South Carolina, Greenville also pulled down some national rankings from U.S. News, including:
- No. 38 Best Places to Live
- No. 44 Best Places to Retire
- No. 16 Cheapest Places to Live

“Situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville has transformed from a blip on the national map to a bustling metropolis. The former textile powerhouse now has an influx of manufacturing jobs to thank for its growth, with companies like GE and Michelin moving in and infusing the town with new energy. The reinvigorated downtown serves as the focal point of the region, attracting new business, hosting an emerging culinary scene and housing what some call the crown jewel of Greenville: Falls Park on the Reedy.”
