SC Department of Motor Vehicles to reopen all branches Monday, May 4, operating by appointment only

Beginning Monday, May 4, the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV) will reopen all 66 branch offices throughout the state to increase convenience for customers.

All SCDMV offices will still adhere to social distancing recommendations and all offices will operate by appointment only.

“South Carolinians have been extremely patient during this transitional time, and I am appreciative of the number who completed their transactions online or delayed visiting the SCDMV to keep themselves and our employees healthy,” said SCDMV Executive Director Kevin Shwedo. “We look forward to returning to full service at the earliest opportunity.”

All SCDMV branch offices except Allendale and McCormick locations will be open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All SCDMV and State of South Carolina offices will be closed Monday, May 11, in accordance with the published state holiday schedule.

SCDMV customers must continue to adhere to social distancing measures, ensuring six feet of physical separation between themselves and others. The number of customers inside a branch office will be limited, and agency personnel will continue to serve customers at every other counter in the office to ensure proper spacing.

Non-commercial road tests remain suspended indefinitely due to social distancing concerns. A customer in need of a non-commercial road test may contact a licensed driving school in South Carolina to determine if the driving school is offering road tests. Additionally, the SCDMV will continue to offer a limited number of commercial driver’s license (CDL) skills tests and will continue to conduct motorcycle licensing road tests.

To further enhance social distancing and prevent customers from having to physically visit an SCDMV branch office, the agency is expanding its online transaction capability.

As a reminder, the SCDMV has temporarily extended the expiration date of some SCDMV products like driver’s licenses, ID cards, vehicle registrations, and temporary license plates.
