Personalized Petals: Florabare Florist’s Paul Vaughn crafts distinctive designs
PELZER, S.C. – With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we had the pleasure of visiting the home studio of Paul Vaughn, local artisan and proprietor of Florabare Florist, to delve into his business and this year’s floral trends.
Paul’s approach to floral design is truly distinctive. He expressed his preference for understanding both the person placing the order and the recipient, emphasizing the importance of personalization in his creations.
“You’ve got to find your own way when it comes to design. You can’t follow everybody else. If you do, you get lost amongst all the other designs that are the same,” he explained. “What I do is strictly me. I don’t like to follow that design point that a lot of people follow. I don’t like to follow the school teachings that people follow. I go about it a totally different way. It’s all about the eye; it’s all about the person that it is going to. It’s all about the person who is ordering it, so it’s sort of a collaborative effort in the end.”
Paul highlighted that Valentine’s Day is the ideal occasion to incorporate blooms not commonly found in everyday arrangements.
“For Valentine’s Day especially, it’s all about the product. We want the product to be high end – not low quality,” he explained. “It’s a lot of garden roses, a lot of high-end hydrangeas and a lot of high-end fillers. Things that you wouldn’t expect to see in some of your every day work just because it is more expensive, but we like that. There’s actual thought in this; it’s not just six roses in a vase.”
To ensure the best quality, he recommended preordering arrangements well in advance, especially when supporting a small business.
“Pre-orders are up now on the website. If you want to order out a couple of weeks, that is great because I know how to plan,” he said. “In terms of last minute orders, it is what it is. You get what you get. There’s no asking for a color or anything like that, so please pre-order.”
Beyond traditional flower arrangements, Paul also ventures into creating artwork by preserving flowers and incorporating natural elements, like bugs and antlers.
“This is more of a living art piece, or living artwork. I say that because there are a lot of living elements to it. They may not be living now, but in terms of the antlers, the bugs, the moss, and things like that create the living art feel,” he said. “These are things that I go looking for actively. If I am out in nature or we go on a hike, I am constantly looking for things to use in my art pieces.”
For those with specific ideas for living art pieces in mind, Paul will collaborate and work with you to preserve those memories perfectly.
In addition to catering to Valentine’s Day, Paul offers his floral design services for weddings, birthdays, funerals, and any event where floral arrangements are needed.
