GREENVILLE, S.C. — Parker Sewer and Fire Subdistrict employees will receive increases in their salaries, and firefighters will get a second set of turnout gear because the Parker Commissioners passed a $13,540,037 budget Tuesday night.

The pay increase is based on a variety of factors including tenure, department, current pay scale, and the like.

Commission Chairman Alan Kay said the pay raises are needed because employees sometimes leave for higher-paying jobs.

“Parker employees are highly trained professionals who do excellent work, so they are sought after by similar organizations in the Upstate,” said Kay. “We want to reward them for their hard work and dedication, and it also saves the District on training costs.”

In addition, the District will be purchasing about 80 new sets of turnout gear that allow firefighters to change and clean their firefighting gear between callouts, he said. Recent studies have shown links between cancer and carcinogens in the smoke firefighters are exposed to. The second set of turnout gear will reduce the amount of contact firefighters have to these carcinogens, and will therefore reduce the risk firefighters have of developing cancers.

“This is a great step in protecting our firefighters,” said Chief Greg Farley.  “The Commissioners have put safety first and continue to show Parker values each person who works for the District and who lives in the District.”
