Mauldin’s 10th SOOIE BBQ festival is the perfect pig-out

SOOIE., Mauldin’s 10th Annual BBQ Festival, is set for Sept, 18-19 at Mauldin Cultural Center’s Outdoor Amphitheater.
Produced by the City of Mauldin, the festival features more than 25 participants from across the Southeast competing in a BBQ Cook-off judged by the South Carolina Barbeque Association (SCBA).
Paired with live music and family fun, this popular Upstate festival is the perfect pig-out. SOOIE. hours are: Friday, September 18, from 6-9 p.m.; and Saturday, September 19, from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
The City of Mauldin and the Mauldin Cultural Center will be implementing guidelines and changes to this year’s event due to COVID-19. Staff, cookers and volunteers all will be required to wear masks, and guests will be encouraged to wear masks when not eating.
Guests are required to have their temperature taken at check-in tents in the ticketing area and will be asked to agree to a waiver for the event. All information regarding the City of Mauldin’s COVID-19 protocols can be found at mauldinbbq.com. Should conditions require that the event be cancelled or postponed, an announcement will be posted on the mauldinbbq.com website.
The festival opens Friday night with the Anything Butt competition, where participating cookers serve anything BUTT their BBQ to pique attendee taste buds. Food items will be judged by a guest panel, with special awards given to the winners during Saturday’s ceremony.
This year’s Cook-off will feature beach music sponsored by Duke Energy, with The Holiday Band performing on Friday, followed by a fireworks display sponsored by United Community Bank. Supporting sponsors for this year’s BBQ Cook-off include Servus Realty Group and Lending Path Mortgage.
Saturday features the main event, a BBQ Cook-off competition with a panel of certified BBQ Tasters from the SCBA. The public also will have a chance to cast their vote for the best BBQ and the winner of the Gabe Hunter People’s Choice Award. The Catalinas will perform live on Saturday.
Children can enjoy fun activities and a petting zoo during both days of the event.
