Ingles Open Road: Woolworth Walk

We’re visiting a place where art and history, craft and culture, and food and fun stroll hand in hand. We’re back in Asheville. And this is Woolworth Walk.

Located in the heart of downtown in Asheville’s historic shopping district on Haywood Street, Woolworth Walk is a glorious gallery housed inside the historic F.W. Woolworth building.

First created in 1938 as part of the original five and dime Woolworth’s chain, its current iteration as an art gallery began in 2002. And more than 20 years later, it’s still going strong.

Today you’ll find two stories of amazing works with over 170 artists on display in this sprawling 20,000 square foot beauty. Artists range from casual crafters to professionally trained artisans… from retired art hobbyists to Southern Highland Guild Craft members. The diversity of art displayed is vast and guaranteed to provide you with plenty to fall in love with for yourself… and for any gift occasion.

Each of the different spaces here have their own style and flair. You find your mood shifting from gallery to gallery, and your mind constantly engaging with all the amazing pieces on display.

Woolworth Walk’s goal is to provide a venue for local artists to connect with art lovers, to share their passion in creating art and to enhance your surroundings when you take something home. And with a variety of price points there really is something for every budget and every taste.

And speaking of taste you have to make sure and stop by the Soda Fountain. This place was part of the sit-in movement of the 1960’s, as high school students from the Asheville Student Committee on Racial Equality (or, ASCORE) bravely sat down to stand up for what was right – laying down a legacy for all of us to try and live up to.
