From Novices to Pros: Sharpen your skills at Upstate Archery Academy
TAYLORS, S.C. – Whether you are looking to learn a new skill or sharpen an old one, Upstate Archery Academy offers something for every skill level. And owners Jack and Shelley Williamson believe archery is for everyone.
“You don’t have to be an athlete to shoot. Any body shape, any size, anybody and everybody can shoot archery,” Jack explained. “We can start at the absolute beginner level. Everything is supplied. It can be a one day thing, a six-week thing, or a three-year thing. It is according to how much you like it and how much you want to come back.”
Before opening the academy on Wade Hampton Boulevard in 2023, Jack coached archery for 8 years, holding a USA Archery Level III coaching certificate along with S3DA and NASP coaching certificates. Shelley, who holds a USA Archery Level II coaching certificate, also served as a coach for 2 years.
“I shot personally for a little while, and then my daughter wanted to shoot,” Jack explained. “Through school, we were able to start a team at JL Mann. For four years, we did it through JL Mann High School. It was a great opportunity. I loved shooting with the kids, but, unfortunately, COVID-19 kind of shut that down.”
After the program ended, the Williamsons missed coaching and wanted to continue to share their love of archery with the community.
“We have one-on-one classes, group classes, all the equipment, arrows, and targets. We start at basically any age. If they can pull the bow, we will do a one-on-one class with them,” Jack explained. “We have had a lot of older men and women in here shooting with us weekly.”
“You can come in and rent a lane. You can come in and we can talk about product. If you’re new to archery and want to learn, we can teach you and see what is best for you then fit you in a bow. If you’re a hunter and your bow is broken or you need help, we can fix your bow. Whatever you need, we can help you,” Shelley added.
The Upstate Archery Academy is located at 2830 Wade Hampton Blvd. Suite 25 in Taylors. It is open Tuesday through Friday from 3-8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The range is open for walk-ins during business hours, and lanes can be rented for $10 per hour of $15 for the day. Archers are welcome to bring their own equipment or rent some from the pro shop. The pro shop also offers new equipment, installations, repairs and tuning.
“We’ve done birthday parties, corporate events, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts. We can do any of that stuff. It’s an hour-and-a-half class. We teach you how to do archery and then we play games, earn pins and enjoy the time together,” Shelley explained.
